ISIS or the Islamic State is one of the most fearsome extremist groups that is still active in the world. Even though the organization has its roots in the Middle East, its branches can be found in the world’s farthest corners. In one such case, a US citizen from Springfield, Virginia, was found to be in connection with ISIS.
As per reports, a US citizen named Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, a 35-year-old muslim man, was found to be financially aiding the extremist organization using crypto. The US Department of Justice just shared the news of the incident. Chippa has been taken into custody and sentenced to 364 months in Federal prison.
Crypto As Financial Aid
Court reports suggested that Chippa has been using crypto to aid ISIS financially. The money trail suggests that Chippa has used his network to send money to female ISIS members located in Syria. The money trail indicates that the funds have not yet been used to fund terror efforts, but it has been used to escape detention camps and bring in arms.
Chippa has used social media and dark web rooms to extract funds from more supporters across the United States of America. Chippa even collected funds in physical cash to make terror-funding accessible. Later, he would use his intermediaries located in Turkey to convert the funds and smuggle them into Syria.
This incident has laid bare the loopholes of the US security and crypto landscape. Therefore, it is high time that the US government closes those loopholes. Otherwise, there can be another September 11th, but more devastating.
