According to an Europol statement from May 14th, the body coordinated with Spanish, Austrian, and Belgian legal forces to arrest at least 17 prime suspects running a parallel fake banking structure in their respective locations.
The operation received leads into migrant smuggling, followed by drug trafficking. The enforcement personnel found a clear link between the group’s activities and these malicious developments. The sources say that the extorted money funds the banking operations.
Results of the Investigation
The investigating force dismantled the malicious group’s parallel economy. However, upon deep introspection, it was discovered that the group used the hawala-style money transfer system as part of its initiatives.
They allowed their clients to bypass formal banking procedures. According to Europol, the group was involved in one of the deadliest financial crimes in the region. Most importantly, they offered crypto for cash exchange to many criminal activists.
More Into The Group’s Activities
The investigators discovered two main branches from which the group operated. The first targeted the Arabic-speaking population, essentially hailing from the GCC annd Middle East sectors. The other was allegedly linked with the Chinese networks.
According to the Spanish authorities, 13 property searches have been conducted across various cities, including Valencia, Madrid, Cadiz, Almeria, Malaga, etc. Out of the 17 suspects, charge sheets have been filed against 15. Two to follow suit.
How Many Assets Have Been Recovered?
€183,000 worth of crypto has been discovered among the assets seized from the vicious company. They also had €421,000 spread across 77 bank accounts throughout the world. In addition, the authorities discovered 10 real asset properties in their name, the net worth of which could be as high as 2.5 million.
