A shocking news came in from the Scottish Police portal today. It says that crypto crimes have been up by 2000% since 2019. But the worst part is not that. The number of serious and organized crypto crimes are on the rise.
In the last couple of years, hackers have constantly resorted to new approaches to obfuscate their crimes. However, Police Scotland didn’t refer to the number of crypto cases that are registered on a daily or weekly basis.
Can The Police Track and List the Criminals?
According to sources, the police use two ways to track and identify the criminals. Usually, they go by the international crypto law. However, the police also look at the approach and development of a crypto platform to trace the kind of criminals it might attract.
Recent Events
The alertness of Police Scotland increased after a Scottish legal precedent. The prosecutors took the cues from the crime laws to change the stolen cryptocurrency into physical cash. The affirmation of this conversion came in from the Edinburgh High Court. The ruling authorized the conversion of 23.5 Bitcoins into cash.
Interestingly, the 23.5 coins were all linked to John Rennie, the face and the brain behind the robbery in Lanarkshire, Scotland.
The Gap
On Wednesday, officials said that the approach and policing responsibilities to tackle crypto theft have to change. A lot of petitions have come in from the internal departments to forge changes in that regard, too.
However, Police Scotland is taking the time needed to make Scotland’s response aligned with that of the UK jurisdictions. The crypto experts say that this approach will make the policing stronger and more clinical for sure.
